The BEC provides an infrastructure that makes it easy for volunteers to sign up and also has many resources to help them with planning a visit to a school.
Why Participate in NEM?
It is critical for employers to connect with schools through programs like National Engineers Month.
When engineers step into the classroom, a real-world connection occurs that is a powerful learning exchange. Learning comes alive as students experience engineering in action, find out about the opportunities and rewards of being an engineer, and get excited about math and science in a new way.
NEM Stimulates K-12 Interest in Math & Science
- The annual infusion of engineers into K-12 classrooms during NEM supports workforce development and quality education in Oregon.
- The time to connect with students about their potential careers is during their K-12 school years. It is at this crucial time that interest is sparked and basic skills are established.
- Well-prepared high school graduates are more likely to pursue post-secondary degrees in related fields and offer a capable talent pool for employers.
Filling the Void in Math and Science
NEM helps fill the void in Oregon education in a way no other method can. The current state of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in Oregon needs vast improvement as these statistics show:
- 77% of third-grade students meet math standards, dropping to 56% for eighth graders and 44% for tenth graders.
- Of the 441 doctorates hired in engineering and computer science from 2000 to 2004 at Intel, seven came from Oregon universities.
- Only 11% of Intel hires with master's degrees were educated in Oregon.
