Bernoulli's Principle

Materials:

  • Dixie cup

  • Ping Pong Ball

Procedure #1:

  • Using a pencil, puncture a large hole in the bottom of the cup.

  • Place ping pong ball inside the cup so that it covers the hole.

  • Blow up through the bottom of the cup and blow the ball out of the cup.

Procedure #2:

  • Using a pencil, puncture a large hole in the bottom of the cup.

  • Invert the cup. Place ping pong ball up inside the cup so that it covers the hole.

  • Blow hard and steady down through the hole. Release your support of the ball after you start to blow.

Discussion:

  • Did the ball react in the way you expected? Why could it not be blown out of the cup?

  • In #2, was there a force that overcame the attraction of gravity?

  • How does this show that air increased in velocity, is decreased in pressure?

  • What is the relative strengths between the air pressure moving up through the bottom and the normal air pressure above the ball?
