Recycled Water

Reference: Jeff Parkhurst

Materials:

  • Dixie cup (3)

  • Pebbles, sand, and gravel of various sizes
Alternative: can use popcorn or rice too

  • Pin

Procedure:

  • Poke many holes in the Dixie cup with the pin.

  • First place a layer of coarse gravel slightly larger than perforations.

  • Next spread a layer (1/2 to 3/4") of gravel and sand.

  • In another container mix a quantity of dirty water containing soil, sawdust, etc.

  • Pour dirty water through the cup (into a third cup) and allow it to drain into the remaining clean cup.

Discussion:

  • What is the advantage to a filter on the city water supply?

  • Would this filter take out germs?

  • Would stream water always be pure even if it flows through sand and rocks?

  • After filtering water what could be done to insure its safety for drinking purposes?
